The Name Arahura
ara – path, lane, passageway, way
hura – to remove (a covering), to uncover, show, unveil
Arahura – “pathway to discovery”, “discovering the path”
The name Arahura was gifted to the centre when it was first founded, in 1986/1987, by the late Rev. Maurice Manawaroa Gray. Maurice was Upoko Runaka (tribal leader) of Te Runaka ki Otautahi o Kai Tahu (the Christchurch tribal council of Kai Tahu) and descended from many tribes, including Ngāti Porou, Ngāti Kahungunu, Rangitāne, Kai Tahu, Kati Mamoe and Waitaha.
